Summary Unit 4



ANIMALS

Animals can be classified according to different criteria: what they eat, how they reproduce or if they have a skeleton or not.

Animals sorted by nutrition:


  1. Carnivores: they eat meat (other animals).
  2. Herbivores: they eat vegetables.
  3. Omnivores: they eat both meat and vegetables.
  4. Scavengers: they eat dead animals.
  5. Decomposers: they eat decaying plants and meat.

Animals sorted by reproduction:

Viviparous: they grow in the womb before they are born.

Oviparous: they lay eggs.

  • Amphibians
  • Reptiles
  • Birds
  • Insects
  • Fish

Animals sorted by skeleton:

Vertebrates: they have spinal cord (backbone with vertebrae)

  • Fish
  • Mammals
  • Reptiles
  • Amphibians
  • Birds
Invertebrates: they have NO inner skeleton

  • Sponges
  • Cnidarians
  • Worms
  • Molluscs
  • Arthropods: (they have exoskeleton)
